A Blu-ray burner, and relaxed country-coding

• Pioneer Electronics has announced the first PC drive that supports Blu-ray, the high-capacity discs that are being used in the PS3. The burner is the next salvo in the “war” between Sony’s Blu-ray format and Toshiba’s HD-DVD. [PunchJump]

• The authorities have also decided on region coding for Blu-ray discs, and Japan and the U.S. are for whatever reason in the same region. That means it’ll be easy to import movies, and maybe even PS3 games, on the Blu-ray format. [GamersReports]

Region 1: North America, South America, East Asia except for China (India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia etc.)
Region 2: Europe and Africa
Region 3: China, Russia and other countries
