Sony announces six games, then takes it back

Thursday, January 19th, 2006

We don’t speak Japanese, but we have noticed the latest launch mystery — this time coming from the PlayStation.jp web site.

FULL STORY:

Yesterday, that official site posted a list of PS3 titles, which would have been the first to be confirmed by Sony Japan. Today, they took the games down, as well as any mention of the PS3. Here’s the original list:

  • Angel Rings (RPG)
  • Everybody’s Golf 5 (Sports)
  • Genji 2 (Action)
  • Gran Turismo Series (Racing)
  • Monster Carnival (Action / RPG)
  • The Eye of Judgement (Unknown Genre)

Sony’s statement to GamesIndustry.biz didn’t explain much.

“We are working on the launch of PlayStation 3 and a confirmed list of titles will be announced at the appropriate time.”

We’ll keep waiting. Thanks for the sneak peak.

UPDATE: Kotaku got a response from Sony PR on the issue, too. Here it is:

These were titles we already disclosed at Tokyo Game Show last year, as titles being developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan for PLAYSTATION 3. We do not disclose further details.

More speculation on PS3 delays

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

A lot of stuff we already know has made it into today’s mainstream news cycle, most of it under the heading “PS3 release date in question.”

FULL STORY:

Quoting a few analysts, a story in MarketWatch speculates on some late-launch possibilities:

After touring the Sony booth at CES, analyst William Drewry of Credit Suisse First Boston wrote that “the decision as to whether to delay the PS3 launch has yet to be made and is dependent on (improving its chip yield).” …

“We view any potential delay as being one to two months rather than six months duration,” wrote Drewry.

Another analyst, Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities, said “the most likely scenario” is that PS3 will be released in Japan this summer with about 1 million units and in the U.S. in November with 1 million units, followed by a European launch in March 2007.

The bottom line: We haven’t seen a shred of evidence that the PS3 is ready for a Spring launch, or that anyone — Sony included — has serious intentions of releasing it within the next few months. In the meantime, enjoy a story full of analysts.

News Roundup

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

My apologies for not posting for awhile. But here’s what you might have missed while I was gone.

Nintendo’s Wii video-game console to undercut Sony’s PlayStation 3 [AP]
Nintendo said yesterday that its quirky game console, the Wii, will go on sale in the United States on Nov. 19 for $250 — much less than Sony’s PlayStation 3, which launches just two days earlier with $500 and $600 models.”

(What a novel concept…launching something on time and at a reasonable price. That might just be crazy enough to work.)

Xfire for Sony Playstation 3 But Only for One Game [Gameshout]
“Using Xfire as a chat communication utility will allow players to find friends in-game and join them in epic battles as well as communicate with them.”

(Continues with Sony’s business model of half-assedry.)

Enchanted Arms Coming to Playstation 3 [Pro-G]
“Given the poor sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan it’s no surprise to see the title heading to the PS3, and the lack of RPGs at the launch of the system should guarantee it some success.”

(Now all you need is a console to play it on.)

Analyst: 80 percent of launch PS3s to be high end [Gamespot]
“The split between premium (60GB) and core (20GB) units at US retail stores should be roughly 80/20 [percent]“

(Good news for the Ebay junkies hoping to cash in on the feeding frenzy this Christmas. Not too big of a deal for everyone else.)

Xbox Slams PS3’s Progress

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

In a recent interview an Xbox chief slammed Sony’s PS3 productions.

FULL STORY:

“Nobody knows when Playstation 3 is going to come. The rumours are it will come out in the spring, but only in Japan.”

“Nobody knows what it is going to cost. Who the heck knows what the games will look like for Playstation 3.”

Sony definitely hasn’t been giving us much to prove these statements wrong, but at this point no one can really make an educated statement on PS3’s progress. We’ll keep you posted on this little war of words.

We’ve partnered up with our new friends at PS3Forumz.com to make them the official PS3week message board.

FULL STORY:

They’ve already got a pretty active forum going, so head over there on this long, newsless weekend to check the place out. There’s a new forum design on the way, too, so stay tuned.

Oh, one more thing. The guys at PS3Forumz already have a contest going — they are giving away a launch PS3 to one lucky member. As soon as you hit 100 posts, you’re automatically entered. No scams, like all those Google ads running at the top of our site. Here are the details.

After a tough E3, it’s curtains for the PS3

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

I came to L.A. a Sony fan, sure that the creator of today’s leading game machine would rock E3 and continue its dominance into the next generation. They’ve got everything, after all – a rabid and ever-growing fan base, a technological upper hand, and some of the most popular software franchises in the industry. A week ago, PlayStation 3 had all the momentum.

Tonight, I’m writing its obituary. http://www.thewhitleyfamily.net/blog/?p=3-5933 aC sn LeaT

360 Roundup: 600,000 in the US, and loving HD-DVD

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

• A market analyst for NPD Group said yesterday that Microsoft has sold 600,000 Xbox 360s so far in the United States. Microsoft isn’t commenting on this number, perhaps because it doesn’t really mesh with what they said earlier this week.

On Monday, Microsoft reduced its sales forecast for the 360, and said that 1.3 million had been sold worldwide so far. So, less than half of sales have been in the US? Maybe, but considering how bad the system’s doing in Japan that seems sketchy. It’s possible that NPD Group and Microsoft are using different definitions of a sale, but who knows. [Reuters]

• In other postitive news, Amazon and Wal-Mart apparently have some Xbox 360 bundles in stock. [I4U News]

• On Tuesday, Xbox VP Peter Moore said that the company hadn’t ruled out a Blu-ray add-on for the 360. When corporate got wind of that, they released a statement reaffirming their loyalty to HD-DVD for the forseeable future.

Xbox 360 is a future-proofed system – one that allows us to add features as consumers demand them – as evidenced by our offering of the HD-DVD drive as an accessory. Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect. At this point, we’re fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats.

So there you have that. [Gaming 360]

EARLIER: We break down the differences between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, and why Sony’s vertical integration gives them a big advantage.

Money money money moooney….. MUUUUH-ney

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s probably the funniest Wii vs. PS3 parody video yet. Not that I know of that many. But this one is the best.

It turns out there will be more PS3’s for the rest of us, since the editor of the Official Playstation Magazine – get this – Apparently the salaries that magazine pays its editors do not include $600 discretionary expenses.

But is Ms. Jongewaard mistaken? After all, the Official PS3 Web site is now detailing all of the wonderful benefits of the system, including its Blu-ray technology, and the bonus feature of the extra adapter you get to pay for if you want to save PSX and PS2 games. An excerpt from the benefits site*:

“$600 in $1 bills would weigh approximately 98 lbs. Carrying this amount of weight could physically strain the average gamer to the point of coronary heart failure in a mere 4 seconds. Therefore the PlayStation 3 removes the danger of a heart attack and replaces it with the opportunity for hours of safe, stationary entertainment.”

Besides, all of that is trifling compared to the $900 you’ll pay for an HD-DVD enabled XBox 360, according to the Internet’s favorite news source, an unconfirmed rumor.

*Not actually an excerpt. Actually made up.

Sex, drugs and video games

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

This doesn’t have much to do with the PlayStation 3, but we figure if the New York Times takes enough time off from disgracing journalism to address adult video gaming, it’s worth a link. Using the overlap of the Consumer Electronics Show and the Adult Video News porn conference as its news peg, the Times delves into the world of erotic gaming.

“We thought we would be building bigger, more sophisticated games by now like you see on PlayStation and Xbox,” Joone said, “but the problem is that Sony and Microsoft are the gatekeepers and they don’t want it.”

And, just in case you were wondering, GTA is still destroying our youth…

“Grand Theft Auto is marketed to children, and in that game you can beat women without their consent and that is unacceptable,” he said. “In our game you can’t have sex with someone unless it’s consensual. In our game, if someone doesn’t like what you’re doing, they can tell you to stop.”

Stop! That’s enough newspaper for tonight, thank you very much.

Medal of Honor Airborne headed for PS3

Friday, January 13th, 2006

Electronic Arts reveals that the game will hit just about every console — PS3, 360, and all the current-gen systems — in this month’s Game Informer magazine. Expect an official announcement, and full preview, soon.

The cover mentions parachute drops, four player co-op, “interactive battlefields,” and “life-like facial technology” as part of the shooter’s next-gen package.
