100-gig Blu-rays on the way
TDK has developed Blu-ray discs with a huge storage capacity — but they’re still slow, expensive and a year away.
FULL STORY:
We’ve written a lot about Blu-ray and the PlayStation 3, so here’s another update: tech company TDK is planning to start production on 100GB Blu-ray discs in 2007. One Blu-ray layer holds about 25 gigs, so these are essentially four-layer discs with capacities higher than most hard drives.
Of course, there are a few obvious setbacks: even the 25 and 50GB versions will initially cost $75 and $100 when they’re released in October 2006. But as production steadies and the technology matures, prices will drop dramatically. And current write speeds are stuck at a snail’s pace: 2x.
